ALIVE JEWELRY: THE MAQUECH BROACH

When living in Mexico city, I went to the market la Lagunilla in order to try the chapulines (a grasshoper eaten roasted with chile and lime), and I ended up discovering an unexpected jewelry : the Maquech broach.

Theses poor live beetles are covered with precious stones and sold on the market as fashion accessories. They are part of a decorative tradition dating back to ancient Mayan civilizations.

+ Here comes recipe of how to cook the chapulines. If you would like to try a different kind of bug, you can check this list of edible insects.
